Detroit Windsor Tunnel The underwater tunnel, opened on November 3, 1930, runs the width of the Detroit River, connecting downtown Windsor and Detroit. The world's only underwater border crossing designed to accommodate cars is 23 meters (75 feet) below the surface of the river and nearly 1,600 meters (almost a mile) long.
